The amazing Love Story

Embargoed 00.01 Saturday 29 March 2014

Equality campaigner and Labour’s Parliamentary Candidate for Sutton and Cheam, Emily Brothers is delighted by the introduction of equal marriage today, saying:
“I’m proud that Britain has at last recognised love is equal between same-sex couples and male-female relationships.
“Today and hereafter in Sutton and Cheam, gay and lesbian couples will be shaping their own amazing love story, demonstrating their commitment to each other and mapping out a future together – something that we should all celebrate.
“On my part, I’m just waiting for the right proposal to come my way in the knowledge that most people now embrace equality of love.
“I don’t often praise David Cameron, but I must make an exception on this occasion with equal marriage, as he has shown personal commitment and leadership amidst significant opposition from his ‘swivel eyed loons’ and Lib Dem evangelists.
“Couples already in Civil Partnerships will not be able to convert to marriage until later this year as the Coalition has got itself into a muddle yet again, so they’ll need to get their red tape untangled quickly.
“In the meantime, I congratulate the gay and lesbian couples who are making history in Sutton and Cheam with equal marriage.”

Notes to Editors
1. The Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act 2013 legalises same-sex marriage in England and Wales, receiving Royal assent on 17 July 2013 and enforced from 29 March 2014. The Act is notable for its "quadruple lock" to safeguard religious organisations from being forced to conduct same sex marriages.
