Attending the opening of new science Facilities at Greenshaw High School, Labour’s Parliamentary Candidate for Sutton and Cheam, Emily Brothers, said:
“I know from my own children’s time spent as students at Greenshaw that it provides a comprehensive range of learning opportunities, so it is great to see the school build on those foundations with new science facilities.
“I’m especially pleased that girls are doing very well in science at Greenshaw, so bucking the national trend.
“I’m very pleased that local children will be developing their knowledge of science and acquiring skills to take into the workplace. This is particularly important here in Sutton due to the borough’s ambition to attract life science businesses.
“I want to take our ambitions beyond improved facilities, so our young people get the best teaching support possible. That’s why Labour will introduce a new ‘master teacher’ status. We will introduce a new ‘Master Teacher’ status as part of major transformations to teaching, inspired by education reforms in Singapore.
“I want to broaden and improve career paths into education - to encompass teaching, specialist and leadership roles. Teachers who excel at Greenshaw and other schools across the borough will have their professional development recognised.
“I’m committed to reversing unqualified teaching which Paul Burstow is supporting – rising to 16% under the Coalition.”
