Labour Candidate Calls for reform on Energy and is Perplexed by Coalition

Saturday 30 November 2013

Emily Brothers, Labour’s Parliamentary Candidate for Sutton and Cheam, is calling for reforms to Britain’s electricity and gas market. She said:

“I know how people in Sutton and Cheam are struggling with the rising cost of living. Many people I speak to are worried about their energy bills. Some are having to make a choice between heating their homes or buying food.

“Energy bills for families have risen by almost £300 since Paul Burstow threw in his hand with the Tories, making it hard for people to make ends meet.

“This is why we need change to reform the energy market, so it works for everyone.”

Ed Miliband has announced that the next Labour Government will freeze gas and electricity prices until the start of 2017, saving a typical household £120 a year. He said:

"Labour is setting out our plan to make sure gas and electricity is affordable and available for this generation and generations to come.

"We will stop people being ripped off and, together, we will power Britain into the next century."

Leaks over the last few days have perplexed Ms Brothers, as she says:

“The Tory-LibDem £50 annual cut to the Green Levy for funding insulation is typically short sighted.

“Many of our homes are old and inefficient. We need schemes to help improve the retention of energy. This is key to bringing bills down for the residents of Sutton and Cheam.

“Moreover, axing household insulation by half will result in 10,000 job losses around the country – so much for economic growth.

“I am perplexed by the LibDem-Tory muddle in response to the crisis in falling living standards.”

On 29/11/13 The Labour Party announced plans to improve competition in the market, establish a new Energy Security Board to deliver the capacity we need and create a tough new regulator to prevent overcharging. The Energy Green Paper sets out the steps a One Nation Labour government will take to reset the market during the 20 month price freeze to ensure energy is affordable and available for the long term.
