There were ugly scenes today of Lib Dem intimidation of protesters outside St Helier Hospital, particularly towards Labour’s Prospective Member of Parliament for Sutton and Cheam, Emily Brothers who is blind. Despite her assistant asking Lib Dem supporters to refrain from waving placards in Ms Brothers’ face and give her personal space, Lib Dem supporter, Anne Singleton, continued to challenge Labour’s candidate. There was concern about Ms Brothers’ safety.
Following the incident, Emily Brothers said:
“I would like to assure everybody that all is well with me. It was an unpleasant incident, but it is only to be expected when you stand up to Lib Dem bully tactics.
“I had a sense that things were being held in front of my face, as it felt disorientating amongst the noise. It is difficult enough getting around without sight and poor hearing without that kind of nonsense.
“Lib Dem members and supporters may try to block and push me, but I’m not going to let them cover up their broken promises.
“I’m grateful to the words of support on social media today, particularly from political opponents – nothing from the Lib Dem Party of course.
“All I was seeking to do was peacefully protest about the Lib Dem record in government - for backing Tory measure after measure on austerity, undermining our NHS and creating a local school places crisis. They now sadly seem to have also turned their backs on civil liberties.”
