Just twelve days after major heart bypass surgery, Labour’s Emily Brothers gave her first speech since leaving hospital. In an emotionally charged presentation about her personal journey, Ms Brothers told the 250 strong audience about the resilience needed to go through gender transition and other life changes, such as her loss of sight.
TEDxCoventGardenWomen brought once again the energy of the global TEDWomen conference in Monterey to London with the second event on Saturday 30 May 2015, held at the prestigious theatre of the London Museum.
Drawing together an international line-up of speakers that included Labour’s Emily Brothers, British journalist and feminist activist Caroline Criado-Perez, Indian-American creator of anti-rape comic book ‘Priya’s Shakti’ Ram Devineni,. TEDxCoventGardenWomen was a day of transformative talks by a diverse cast of gender equality commentators.
Labour’s Parliamentary Candidate at the recent General Election, Emily Brothers said:
“I’m very proud to have been asked to speak at this year’s TEDxCoventGardenWomen conference.
“I was both exhausted and exhilarated by the experience of speaking to the audience at The London Museum, as well as on TED’s global platform.
“I was told not to do the engagement for health reasons, but I’m too much of an independent woman to stay at home. The presentation proved energy sapping for me, but the event has given my recovery new momentum.
“I’m humbled that people gain inspiration from my personal story. It is a narrative about resilience, change and building momentum. Most of all though, it is about realising the authentic woman within me.”
Since ‘coming out’ to PinkNews in December 2014, Ms Brothers has received extensive coverage by the national press and has given landmark speeches to the Cambridge Union and Queen’s College Oxford. She is building on those engagements with THIS TedxCoventGardenWomen talk.
Speaking just days after IPSO published their adjudication in The Sun about Rod Liddle’s attack on her (
Emily Welcomes The Sun Newspaper Censuring by Press Regulator); Ms Brothers took the opportunity to welcome the decision. This was the first claim from a representative group to be upheld, which Ms Brothers acknowledged as a landmark. However, Ms Brothers expressed disappointment that The Sun had failed to apologise and that IPSO couldn’t require an apology because they are “toothless” in that regard.
In a highly emotionally charged speech, accompanied by her former wife for the first time, Emily Brothers talked about their journey “from partners to sisters”.
Social media reported there wasn’t a dry eye in the house and the speech from Ms Brothers was inspirational.
