LABOUR’S EMILY BROTHERS CONDEMNS ‘FOOLISH AND OFFENCE’ OF LORD FREUD
WEDNESDAY 15 OCTOBER 2014

Labour’s Parliamentary Candidate for Sutton and Cheam, Emily Brothers has condemned the Coalition Government their ‘foolish and offensive’ approach towards disabled people. Ms Brothers has called for Lord Freud, Welfare Minister, to resign amidst controversy over his suggestion that disabled people should be paid less than the National Minimum Wage. Ms Brothers said:
“I’m offended by the Minister’s assertion that some disabled people are ‘not worth the full wage’ and could be paid a poultry £2 per hour.
“This can’t be brushed off as a foolish gaff, as it goes to the core of Conservative thinking. It is a stark reminder of their worst instincts.
“I recall Philip Davies MP (Shipley) casting such aspersions in 2011 about disabled people. Councillor David Scott, who raised the issue with Lord Freud, today defended the Minister’s position. That’s why isn’t credible to suggest Lord Freud was simply ‘thinking outside the box’.
“Lord Freud isn’t responsible for widgets or some obscure policy, but welfare reform that has a direct impact on the lives of disabled people. It really isn’t tenable for him to remain in office supposedly supporting disabled people into work, when he actually wants to drive people into poverty and exploit the disadvantage they experience in the labour market.
“Whilst Lord Freud’s apology is welcome, I don’t think it is sustainable for him to remain in office.”
