Labour’s Parliamentary Candidate for Sutton and Cheam Emily Brothers has followed up her attack on this week’s budget, following yesterday’s so-called alternative Lib Dem budget. Ms Brothers said:
“Less than a day after George Osborne delivered his Budget, it's already unravelling - with the Tories' plans for extreme cuts and the risk they pose to the NHS, increasingly clear. After nodding enthusiastically for that budget yesterday, the Liberal Democrats are today trying to desperately distance themselves from a disastrous record in coalition – they don’t know which way to turn.
“As the independent Office for Budget Responsibility said, these Budget plans will mean “a sharp acceleration” in cuts to public spending – even bigger after the election than over the last five years. These are deeper cuts which go beyond simply balancing the books. They could only be delivered by raising VAT again and putting our NHS at risk. It is precisely the direction of travel Lib Dem coalition partners have taken in this Parliament and would do again if they had the opportunity. That’s what you’ll get with a Lib Dem like Paul Burstow – more broken promises on our NHS, VAT and Tuition Fees.
“Lib Dem attempts to differentiate themselves from the Tories aren't worth the paper they're written on. Even Paul Burstow has repeatedly admitted at hustings held by The Sutton Guardian that the Tories' record is their own.
“The Lib Dems backed the Tories all the way and working families in Sutton have paid the price. It is due to Lib Dem action that working people's wages are down £1,600 a year since 2010 and tax and benefit changes have left families £1,127 worse off.
“Nick Clegg and Paul Burstow broke their central election promises in 2010 and cannot be trusted again. Rather than delivering fair taxes they hiked VAT, and rather than abolishing tuition fees they trebled them. They have been part of a government which imposed the bedroom tax while cutting taxes for millionaires.
“You can’t trust the Lib Dems. No matter what they say, they share the Tories' record of failing Sutton’s working people.”
