Following today’s final public meeting about garden waste conducted by Sutton Council, Labour’s Parliamentary Candidate for Sutton and Cheam, Emily Brothers said:
“I’m frustrated by Lib Dem Sutton Council’s take it or leave it attitude towards garden waste. Local people tell me that they are happy with existing arrangements, but they are not being consulted on getting rid of the current scheme or retaining it. Instead, residents are being told to accept charging or do without any service.
“I’m sure either option will lead to more fly-tipping, resulting in costly clear up to the Council and hastle for local residents. More people will resort to burning their garden waste, leading to further pollution.
“I’m concerned about the impact of charging on low income families and the disproportionate impact on people living alone or with small gardens.
“I’m not clear what the Council is planning for community compost sites, except that much of the provision will be in Cheam and South Sutton. No consideration seems to have been given to how community composting will operate.
“I’m especially concerned that public health implications arising from community composting haven’t been taken into account. Apparently, open air composting sites can increase respiratory infections, asthma and skin complaints among nearby residents unless the sites are properly regulated. Local people are likely to be exposed to emissions of bacteria, spores and fungi, known as "bio aerosols". Handling poorly managed composting can lead to Legionella longbeachae, which can in rare cases cause Legionnaires’ disease, a severe form of pneumonia that can lead to hospital admission and death. That’s why I’m calling on Sutton Council to undertake a health impact assessment.”
