LABOUR’S EMILY BROTHERS CALLS ON SUTTON’S HEALTH LEADER TO DEFEND ST HELIER HOSPITAL SERVICES
TUESDAY 16 DECEMBER 2014

Labour’s Parliamentary Candidate for Sutton and Cheam, Emily Brothers has called on the Chair of Sutton’s Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), to give an assurance that St Helier A&E, maternity, renal and children services are safe under his leadership. This call comes hot on the heels of DR Howard Freeman’s decision to stand down as Chair of Merton Clinical Commissioning Group. Council Leader for Merton, Councillor Stephen Alambritis had urged Dr Freeman to quit due to his support for plans to cut local health services.
A draft strategy from newly formed South West London Collaborative Commissioning (SWLCC) predicted budget a shortfall of £210m over the next five years. It would be shared between clinical commissioning groups working in Sutton, Merton, Wandsworth, Croydon, Kingston and Richmond. Ms Brothers said:
“I would be pleased to work alongside Dr Brendan Hudson if he is prepared to back St Helier’s A&E, maternity, renal and children’s services. If he is not willing to give that commitment, the honourable thing would be to step down.
“I want local leadership on the side of local people. Colluding with other Clinical Commissioning Groups to do the bidding of the Lib Dem and Tory Government isn’t going to achieve Sutton’s aspirations for comprehensive care in hospital or at home.
“I appreciate that former Lib Dem Councillor, Brendan Hudson has to apply the law and policy of the government. Yet on the other hand, doing just that can be untenable when you don’t agree with it.
“However, I suspect Dr Hudson is fully behind the health reforms brought in by his Lib Dem colleague, Paul Burstow MP who helped pilot the Health and Social Care Act in 2012. If that is indeed the case, it is time for Dr Hudson to go, so a new Chair can be appointed to promote the interests of people in Sutton.”
