Following consultation meetings held by Sutton and Merton councils - The Labour Party’s Parliamentary Candidate for Sutton and Cheam – Emily Brothers has given her support to the proposed tram extension. Ms Brothers said:
“I believe that a tram extension from Wimbledon to Sutton would provide economic and social benefits to our borough. There is still a lot of detail to be ironed out, but in principle the proposals are very positive.
“My concerns include road safety and congestion arising from the busy and complex Rosehill junction and how this would impact on traffics flows in and out of Sutton town centre. I’m also not sure that sufficient space is available at the Angel Hill cutting. If the tram is given priority access as I understand, the traffic is likely to block up the road either side of the bridge.
“I’m absolutely clear that taking the tram northwards along Sutton High Street is ridiculous. It would create carnage - putting pedestrian safety at serious risk. It would also transform the local street scene, not least all the clutter that Lib Dem Sutton Council likes.
“Bringing the tram to Sutton has many a mile to go before it is agreed and subsequently developed. That’s why I’m calling for immediate improvements to public transport locally that will make a difference getting around sooner.
“I want to see Thameslink upgraded to a Metro Service, running every 10 minutes or so. Using existing tracks and investing in additional rolling stock would be a cost effective way of improving public transport links.
“I also want to see more night bus services, such as the 154 to link Sutton with Morden and Croydon. People in Sutton and Cheam tell me that they want to move around London frequently and throughout the day and night – linking into the wider city for economic and social benefits.”
