Whilst signing the 38 Degrees Petition on the NHS today in Sutton High Street, Labour’s Parliamentary Candidate for Sutton and Cheam, Emily Brothers said:
“Our NHS is precious. We all rely on it to care for us, especially as we get older or experience the onset of a disability or long term illness. That’s why I’m committed to protecting our NHS by ending widespread privatisation which the Tory and Lib Dem coalition have put in place.
“In recent years NHS funding has been squeezed, resulting in services being run down or closed. This winter, we have witnessed A&E Units up and down the country under tremendous pressure, with some declaring ‘major incidents’ because they're struggling to cope. That’s the appalling record of this discredited Tory and Lib Dem government.
“I want an NHS where patient safety is put first, and where the NHS is run for the public good. That means taking the Recommendations from Robert Francis seriously, to ensure ‘fundamental standards’ of care are observed. This is becoming increasingly difficult because of the competition framework for which Lib Dem Paul Burstow has been a leading advocate.
“The situation could get worse because the Tories and Lib Dem proponents of privatisation reject the need to exempt the NHS from Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) to be negotiated between Europe and America. Only a labour Government will safeguard our NHS with a TTIP exemption.
“I’m signing this petition today because the NHS has been there for me as a child, having eye operation after eye operation. It has continued to support me in adulthood, along with my family and friends. We want that to continue for generations.”
The petition organised by 38 Degrees calls for a stop to privatisation; making sure the NHS has funding it needs to provide high quality care to everyone; and, protecting the NHS from US health corporations with a TTIP exemption.
