Labour’s Parliamentary Candidate for Sutton and Cheam, Emily Brothers has followed up her attack on the Tories at the recent local hustings by slamming the Tory government’s failure, articulating Labour’s plan to change our economy so it works for everyday people, not just a privileged few at the top.
With less than six months to go until the general election, Ed Miliband has set out Labour’s plan to change the country. This will ensure that everyone who works hard is rewarded, broken markets are reformed, the next generation does better than the last and wages are protected and not undercut by immigration.
This contrasts with the Tories’ view that low pay is the only way to compete in the world, that markets will always get the right outcome and that insecurity is the way to make working people work harder.
While UKIP think things were better off when women weren’t working, that life was easier when there wasn’t equality for gay and lesbian people and that the NHS would be better off privatised.
Ms Brothers has slammed these failed ideas which are neither inescapable nor inevitable. There is an alternative and the next Labour government is determined to change the economy so it works for everyday people, not just a privileged few at the top. She said:
“We hear a lot of talk from the government about the economic recovery but there is little of this talk in Sutton and Cheam.
“Instead, people talk to me about how they are worried about their jobs, their wages and their children’s futures. I’ve lost count of the number of young people who’ve told me that they are able to make a decent living, but unable to afford to buy a house. Too many people have asked me why they are on zero hours contracts while those at the top get away with paying zero tax.
“In less than six months’ time we’ll have the opportunity to kick out the Tories and end the zero-zero economy that says ‘as long as those at the top are doing ok, our country is doing ok too’.
“I believe that we can make a real difference in local people’s lives. With Ed Miliband as Prime Minister we’ll create an £8 minimum wage, end exploitive zero hours contracts, freeze energy bills until 2017, cut business rates, create extra apprenticeships and build thousands more new homes every year. “
