SUTTON AND CHEAM LABOUR IN FOR BRITAIN CAMPAIGN

EMILY BROTHERS SAYS ‘SUTTON SRONGER, SAFER AND BETTER OFF IN EUROPE’

SATURDAY 20 FEBRUARY 2016

Following today’s Cabinet meeting, held on a Saturday for the first time since the Falklands War, Emily Brothers of the Sutton and Cheam ‘Labour in for Britain’ campaign said:
“This is a once in a generation opportunity for Sutton and Cheam residents to determine our long term relationship ‘in or out’ of the European Union. For my part, remaining in Europe makes us stronger, safer and better off.
“Last night’s tussle in Brussels and subsequent deal is a side show. Whilst it hopefully encourages some people to back staying in Europe, the central considerations remain economic prosperity, jobs and security.
“Supporters of a ‘Brexit’ do not know how breaking away would unravel, the immediate financial implications or likely barriers to trade over time. They are asking people to take a ‘leap in the dark’ - That’s very risky.
“On the other hand, the benefits of EU membership are well evidenced. Britain is a proud trading nation with almost half of our exports going to EU countries– worth £227 billion last year to the UK economy. We receive on average £26.5 billion of investment every year from other EU countries. UK jobs and businesses large and small are dependent on trade with Europe. “Being in the EU means the average family saves around £450 a year due to lower prices, achieved through the strength we derive from being part of the biggest consumer market in the world.”
The EU Referendum will be held on Thursday 23 June 2016 – in just 93 days time.
