Labour’s Emily Brothers, Parliamentary Candidate for Sutton and Cheam, has stepped up her NHS campaign following her recent acclaimed speech at the Labour Party conference. As the Lib Dem conference opens in Glasgow, Ms Brothers is asking NHS supporters to sign her new petition calling on Paul Burstow, Lib Dem MP for Sutton and Cheam, to vote for Clive Efford’s Private Members Bill to end NHS competition.
“I call on Mr Burstow to vote to end NHS competition and support Labour’s challenge to strengthen local health services through co-operation.
“I’m fed up with all the Lib Dem platitudes about health. It is time to act to save our NHS from their failed re-organisation. Mr Burstow has a chance to remedy his wrongs before it is too late.”
In her recent conference speech Ms Brothers said:
“My LIB Dem opponent in Sutton and Cheam, Paul Burstow – former Health Minister - a key architect of the coalition’s restructuring of Health and Social Care. He fails to recognise the implications arising from these dismal, discredited and disastrous reforms. They don’t see it, won’t fix it – only Labour will repeal the act.
“There is a moment of redemption with the opportunity to support Clive Efford’s NHS Duties and Powers Bill, to end NHS competition. Lib Dem MP’s may well vote for it, as there is little prospect of the Bill passing into law in this Parliament.
“This is what they did recently over the hated and disreputable Bedroom Tax. They say one thing, do another thing – it is gesture politics with a scalpel.”

Launching the petition in Sutton High Street today, Ms Brothers said:
“In calling Paul Burstow to account, I think this is a defining moment to salvage something from his tarnished reputation. If Mr Burstow is serious about protecting ST Helier Hospital and Sutton’s community based health services, he must vote for Labour’s Bill to call time on NHS competition.”
