Labour’s Sutton and Cheam Parliamentary Candidate, Emily Brothers today joined a rally in Trafalgar Square to demonstrate against government health reforms, ending a month-long march that began in Jarrow. The 999 call for the NHS, by the so-called Darlo Mums, has followed the route of the 1936 Jarrow Crusade.

Ms Brothers took part in the protest against increasing privatisation of the health services in England, a claim denied by the government.

Following the rally Ms Brothers challenged local Lib Dem MP, Paul Burstow, on his Coalition’s record. She explained that the Tory-Lib Dem Coalition had scrapped Labour’s guarantee of an appointment within 48 hours and now 60 per cent of patients say they can’t see their GP within two days. In the Sutton Clinical Commissioning Group area 9.99 per cent of patients say they have waited more than a week.

Labour has said they will guarantee a GP appointment within 48 hours and on the same day for those who need it. Ms Brothers said: “I spend a great deal of time meeting with local people, talking about their hopes and concerns. Something I hear more and more about their experiences with health services. People tell me it’s getting harder to see the family doctor, with 19,094 patients in Sutton waiting for a week or more to get a GP appointment. ”Labour rescued the NHS after years of Tory neglect before and we’ll do it again. We’ll get started by guaranteeing a GP appointment within 48 hours and on the same day for those who need it.”

The Darlo Mums made a heartfelt trip to Jarrow on Saturday 5th July to mark the 66th Anniversary of the NHS and to recognise the huge achievement of the Jarrow Crusade who marched in October 1936 from the same town to Parliament.

The People's March for the NHS will follow in the footsteps on the 1936 Jarrow Crusade to raise awareness on what is happening to NHS services across England and to call an end to the great big NHS Sell Off.
