SUTTON AND CHEAM LABOUR IN FOR BRITAIN CAMPAIGN

EMILY BROTHERS HEADS UP ‘LABOUR IN FOR BRITAIN’ CAMPAIGN FOR SUTTON AND CHEAM

FRIDAY 19 FEBRUARY 2016

As the Prime Minister, David Cameron, negotiates Britain’s relationship with Europe, Sutton and Cheam Labour have announced that Emily Brothers will head their ‘Labour in for Britain’ campaign. Ms Brothers stood for Westminster at last year’s General Election and is now running for the London Assembly. She will be assisted in Labour’s campaign by local activist, Christopher Wolmer.
Whilst the 28 EU leaders discuss Britain’s proposals, Ms Brothers said:
“With or without this agreement, I’m absolutely clear that Britain’s rightful place is at the heart of the European Union, influencing at the top table and continuing to secure the economic benefits from our membership. Brexit would have a negative and seismic impact on our economic prospects.
“No one should be hood-winked by the pantomime going on just now. EU Summits always involve late nights of brinkmanship, resulting in the key players emerging bleary eyed to claim some kind of hollow victory. It is a side show, as the fundamental question in the Referendum poses the ‘real deal’ for the British people to decide.
“Whilst the Prime Minister’s deal being cobbled together in Brussels might helpfully persuade some sceptics to support continued EU membership, I suspect he has failed to win over implacable anti-Europeans Like Paul Scully. Nonetheless, I call on Mr Scully to think again and pull from the brink, not to put jobs, rights or security for the people of Sutton in jeopardy.
“As a blind woman, I know something about leaping in the dark – it isn’t wise. That’s what Mr Scully is about to do, with very serious consequences for Sutton residents and businesses. So I say to him, ‘open your eyes to the reality, to the economic case for staying in Europe, to the trading barriers that will be created from withdrawal and loss of global influence, instead of taking a leap into the dark.’
“Over the coming months I’ll seek to work constructively across the political spectrum and with people of no affiliation, to promote Sutton and Britain in Europe for the long term. Working co-operatively through the cross party ‘Stronger Together in Europe’ network will help in that endeavour. Meanwhile, despite the disarray of the ‘out’ campaigns, we mustn’t be complacent – the stakes are too high.”

Emily Brothers is a Labour London-wide Candidate for the Greater London Assembly Election to be held in May 2016. She was Labour’s Parliamentary Candidate for Sutton and Cheam at the 2015 General Election.
