Responding to the publication of GCSE results, Labour’s Parliamentary Candidate for Sutton and Cheam, Emily Brothers commented:
“My congratulations go to everyone who has secured good GCSE grades in Sutton and Cheam. These results are the culmination of years of hard work and perseverance – so well done.
“I’d also like to acknowledge the positive contribution made by their teachers, working to bring about positive outcomes for pupils in Sutton and Cheam in very difficult circumstances.
“With Paul Burstow’s support for the Government’s unqualified teacher policy entry requirements into the profession are amongst the lowest in the developed world. Some of the pupils who have received their grades this summer may have higher qualifications than those teaching them at the start of the next school term.
“That’s why Labour will put a stop to this, ensuring all teachers become qualified. Every child deserves a highly trained and motivated teacher. That’s how they secure a command of mathematics and the English language. That’s how Labour will ensure every child gets the best start in life.”

Notes to Editors
There has been a 16 per cent rise in unqualified teachers in our classrooms in the last year across all state-funded schools. If the number of unqualified teachers continues to rise at this rate, by 2020 there will be nearly 50,000 unqualified teachers working across state-funded schools. This represents one in ten of the current teaching workforce and would mean an average of two unqualified teachers in every state-funded school.
