Labour Spokesperson, Emily Brothers, commented today on cuts to library services in Sutton. She said:
“Whilst understanding the reasons for closing the Mobile Library, I’m concerned that both mainstream services and the Housebound Library effectively meet the needs of residents who find it difficult to get out independently.
“I doubt this latest Lib Dem cut will be the end of it. Instead of drip-drip, they should have dealt with the significant subsidy being put into their vanity Life Centre. They just don’t have any sense of priority.
“I’m glad the Council has listened to people’s opposition to out sourcing. They need to keep that in mind when they come to further so called ‘re-shaping’ of services.”
Sutton’s Environment & Neighbourhoods Committee decided on 04/02/16 to Close Beddington Library from 01/04/16 to save £40,000 annually, close the Mobile Library service from 01/04/16 to save £113,000 annually and suggest it will develop the Housebound Library Service to ensure services continue for vulnerable people. Opening hours will be reduced across the 8 remaining library services across the borough.
