In response to new Government figures published today, Labour’s Parliamentary Candidate for Sutton and Cheam, Emily Brothers said:
“Here in Sutton and Cheam unemployment is still unacceptably high at 1,157, rising in the last year by 4% for adults aged 25 or over and who have been on Job Seekers Allowance for more than two years. The Government is particularly letting down the 200 young people aged 18 to 24 trying to get into work.
“We urgently need action to get local people into work. This is why Labour is calling for a compulsory jobs guarantee, which will get any adult out of work for more than two years, or young person out of work for a year, into a job – one they would be required to take.
“Sutton and Cheam can’t wait any longer for action. Paul Burstow and the Ministers he backs must get off their hands and start helping now before they condemn a whole generation to joblessness.”
Stephen Timms MP, Labour’s Shadow Employment Minister, responding to today's Labour Market Statistics, added:
“While today’s fall in overall unemployment is welcome, it’s extremely worrying that the figures have shown pay falling far behind inflation, and the change in regular pay being the lowest ever on record. Millions of working people face a cost-of-living crisis which has left them over £1600 a year worse off since 2010.
“A Labour government would extend free childcare provision, freeze gas and electricity bills, raise the minimum wage and build more homes to tackle the cost-of-living crisis. We would also bring in a Compulsory Jobs Guarantee to get the next generation into jobs and tackle the high levels of long term unemployment.”
