Emily Brothers, Labour’s Parliamentary Candidate for Sutton and Cheam and Local Government Candidate for Sutton North has condemned Sutton’s Council’s failure to ensure affordable housing on the new Gas Holders Site development. Following a packed Planning Control meeting at the Civic Centre last night (18/11/13), she said:

“This development will bring much needed improvement to the area which I broadly welcome, as the current site blights the gateway to the town centre.

“Financial viability is important, so I understand the need for a retail rather than residential led development, without offices and a hotel

“What I find unacceptable is a complete lack of affordable housing and that Lib Dem Sutton Council have blatantly disregarded this local need.

“I am dismayed that Lib Dem Sutton Council have failed to secure a socially responsible development, nor has it adequately explained why this is not feasible.

“There is a lack of transparency – the facts will not be available to the public owing to commercial interests; so much for accountability.

On access around the new development, Emily Brothers said that:

“Whilst further modelling may indicate adequate traffic flows and public transport, this is not sufficiently evidenced at this time.

“Further consultation is needed to ensure effective traffic flows, accessible public transport and inclusive design that ensures pedestrian safety.”
