Emily Brothers, Labour’s Parliamentary Candidate for Sutton and Cheam has called for further community engagement on the development of a new medical centre on the Henderson Hospital site. Following a stormy Planning Control meeting at the Civic Centre last night (18/11/13), she said:

“Democracy was well served by active local residents turning up for the Planning Control meeting to voice their objections, but little evidence that Sutton Council are listening - even to those able to get into the over-crowded room.

“The lack of candour by Lib Dem Sutton Council that it actually owns a quarter of the site suggests that commercial interests may be over riding those of local residents.

“Scaling back the development in some way, increasing the number of parking spaces and putting in traffic calming measures might assist in finding a more acceptable solution.

Emily Brothers accepts the urgent need for a new Medical Centre for South Sutton, but is frustrated by the lack of progress. She said:

“The local NHS and Council have failed to tackle the need for improved GP services for South Sutton for over a decade.

“This is now becoming a critical issue owing to increased birth rates and an ageing population, meaning that the two existing GP Surgeries are wholly inadequate.

“Due to the failure of Lib Dem Sutton Council to take effective strategic decision in recent years, it is now resorting to pushing through an over developed proposal.

“It is not clear why the shortly to be available Sutton Hospital site would not be suitable.

“I trust that the delay in the planning application process will result in further engagement with the local community, to consider effective adjustments to the plans and alternative site provision.”
